Lemon Squeezy, Gumroad, Payhip or your own checkout?

Lemon Squeezy has the lowest per-sale fee of the merchant-of-record options here, but no marketplace, so every buyer comes from traffic you send. Compare them side by side in Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip and Gumroad alternatives, or head to head in Payhip vs Lemon Squeezy. Run the same price through the Gumroad fee calculator, the Payhip fee calculator or the Stripe fee calculator, and see how many sales a goal takes with the sales goal calculator.

FAQ

How much does Lemon Squeezy take from a sale?

Lemon Squeezy's base fee is 5% + 50¢ per transaction, with no monthly fee, per its pricing page (checked October 27, 2026). Card processing is included in that fee. On a $20 US card sale with no tax that's $1.50, so you keep $18.50.

What extra fees can Lemon Squeezy add?

Lemon Squeezy's fee docs list +1.5% for payments from outside the US, +1.5% for PayPal payments, +0.5% for subscription payments, +5% on payments recovered through abandoned-cart emails, and +3% on sales referred by an affiliate (on top of the commission you pay the affiliate). Payout fees can also apply: free to a US bank via Stripe, 1% per payout to a bank outside the US, and $0.50 per payout to a US PayPal account.

Is the Lemon Squeezy fee charged on the price or on the total with tax?

On the total order value. Lemon Squeezy's own example: a $20 product sold to a buyer in France with 20% VAT is a $24 total, and the fee is $0.50 + 5% of $24 + 1.5% international = $2.06, leaving $17.94 after the tax is paid. The calculator has a tax field so you can see this.

Does Lemon Squeezy handle sales tax and VAT?

Yes. Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record: it calculates, collects and pays sales tax and VAT on your sales. That is a big part of what its fee pays for compared with a plain Stripe checkout, where tax is your job unless you add a tax product.

Is Lemon Squeezy cheaper than Gumroad?

On a direct sale, usually yes: 5% + 50¢ (processing included) against Gumroad's 10% + 50¢ plus 2.9% + 30¢ processing. On a $27 US card sale with no tax you'd keep $25.15 on Lemon Squeezy and about $22.72 on Gumroad. Gumroad has a marketplace (Discover) that can bring buyers; Lemon Squeezy has none, so you bring all the traffic.

Is there a different rate for cheap products?

Lemon Squeezy's fee docs say sellers with products under $10, or high volume, can contact its sales team for custom pricing. We can't verify what those rates are, so the calculator uses the published 5% + 50¢. On a $5 product the 50¢ alone is 10% of the price.
