Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe for Digital Products: Fees, Sales Tax and Which to Start With

Lemon Squeezy and Stripe come up together a lot, partly because Stripe bought Lemon Squeezy in 2024. They still do different jobs. Stripe moves money for you, and you're the seller. Lemon Squeezy is the seller: it takes the payment, delivers the file and handles sales tax and VAT, and charges more per sale for that.

The short answer

• A Stripe Payment Link keeps more on every US card sale: about 77¢ more on a $27 sale and $2.24 more on a $97 sale.
• Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record, so sales tax and VAT registrations, filings and payments are its job, not yours. With plain Stripe they're yours.
• Pick Stripe if you sell mostly to US buyers and are comfortable handling delivery and tax. Pick Lemon Squeezy if you sell to many countries and don't want to think about VAT at all.

What you keep at six prices

Per sale, no tax. Stripe rows use Stripe's US rate of 2.9% + 30¢, plus 1.5% for an international card, plus 1% more when currency conversion is needed. Lemon Squeezy rows use its 5% + 50¢, plus 1.5% for buyers outside the US:

The gap is small at low prices and grows with price. At $27 and 100 sales a month, Stripe keeps about $77 more a month on US cards. Whether that's worth it depends on what the tax work would cost you.

Sales tax and VAT: the real difference

With a Stripe Payment Link, you're the seller of record. Some US states tax digital products, and the EU and UK charge VAT on digital sales to consumers from the first sale. Stripe Tax can calculate and collect tax for you at extra cost, but registering and filing are still yours.

With Lemon Squeezy, the platform is legally the seller to your buyer, so it calculates, collects and remits sales tax and VAT. Its fee is charged on the tax-inclusive total, so on a taxed sale the fee is a little higher than the table shows.

There's a third option now: Stripe Managed Payments, which makes Stripe the merchant of record for eligible digital products for 3.5% on top of the normal payment fees. A simple way to choose

1. Mostly US buyers, one or two products, fine with a little setup: a Stripe Payment Link. Lowest fees, money goes straight to your bank.
2. Lots of EU or UK buyers, or you never want to file VAT: Lemon Squeezy, or Stripe Managed Payments if your product qualifies.
3. Not sure yet: start with whichever you can set up today. Moving later means changing one link, as long as you keep your buyer list.

Common questions

Is Lemon Squeezy owned by Stripe? Yes. Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024. It still runs as its own product with its own pricing.

Does Lemon Squeezy use Stripe to process payments? Lemon Squeezy's fee already includes payment processing, so you don't pay Stripe separately and you don't need your own Stripe account to sell there.
